Food Scientist, Value Engineering

Purpose of Role:
This role provides product development and technical leadership to support the delivery of North American product Value Engineering initiatives. These projects will span discovery, feasibility, development, and implementation phases of product formulation projects with a focus on cost optimization, quality, and supply continuity.

Expectations of the Role Include:
Actively build ideas of cost savings opportunities for ingredients, finish products and processes that will improve the value proposition for the current McCain Foods North America portfolio.
Work collaboratively and cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Marketing, Procurement, R&D, Sales, Operations and Finance to influence and drive projects forward.
Proof of concept testing to determine savings and feasibility.
On time, in full, in quality and at cost delivery of projects that successfully make it to implementation, as committed in the gate process.
Develop robust and accurate ingredient and finished product specifications that are fit for purpose and protect McCain s interests.
Bring creative solutions to technical commercialization challenges.

Top Accountabilities:
Lead technical delivery of medium-to-high complexity programs from ideation to implementation.
Collaborate with suppliers to drive ingredient changes that deliver against McCain s standards and expectations.
Builds relationships within the organization to drive changes within the McCain business. Organizational relationships include Marketing, Manufacturing, R&D, Procurement, Sales, and Operations.
Conduct the technical development and qualification of any new ingredients or product specifications, inclusive of creating, routing, and approving of all ingredient and product changes.
Complete testing to ensure functional acceptability, assure regulatory and product compatibility compliance and life cycle robustness of new ingredients.

Day-to-Day Activities:
Idea generation
o Utilize formula and ingredient knowledge and analysis of existing portfolio to generate cost savings ideas end to end through the supply chain.
o Cross-functional brainstorming to ensure all functions are engaged from ideation to implementation.
Feasibility validation
o Test new product development and ingredient ideas in lab/kitchen environment against known performance specification.
o Identify opportunities for sensory or consumer research, and work with internal and external partners to build test plans, execute testing and interpret results
o Test in pilot and full-scale plant against qualification protocols.
o Develop and/or Modify in process and final specifications. Ensure that all specifications are routed and aligned to by the commercial and technical teams.
Implementation
o Follow through on implementation plan, along with collecting proper documentation and communication along the way.
o Ensure that all KPI s are documented, met and signed off in a robust qualification process with cross-functional partners.
o Travel to manufacturing plants to support trials and qualifications as the technical lead, as needed.
Future Planning:
o Identify future opportunities found during the project.
o Bring them back for idea generation.
Project Management:
o Manage budgets, timelines, and deliverables on accountable projects.
o Effectively plan and communicate with functional partners on projects to deliver results at expected time, cost, and quality.

Qualifications and Experienced Required:

years of professional experience in consumer goods, preferably in food.
Requires a BS in Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related technical field, with demonstrated knowledge of product commercialization.
Strong business acumen, communication, interpersonal, influencing and relationship-building skills.
Successful candidates will have strong technical depth, dynamic cross-functional interaction and highly effective communication skills.
Solid theoretical knowledge of product development, manufacturing processes, sensory and consumer research principles.
