Job Duties:
A Public Defender Investigator provides professional investigative support to staff attorneys in assigned cases such as criminal incidents including felony and misdemeanor cases, probation and parole violations, juvenile court proceedings, and mental and alcohol commitment cases.
Examples of specific job duties: Accept referrals to develop and conduct investigations of cases and obtain information to identify defense issues. Locate, interview and obtain sworn statements from witnesses and obtain expert witnesses. Visit crime scenes to gather evidence, prepare diagrams, and take photographs. Obtain evidence and analyze. Maintain case files with accurate information, prepare reports and enter database information in a timely manner. Present findings and consult with trial attorneys. Special Notes:
This position involves extensive local travel which requires possession of a valid U.S. driver's license that must be maintained as a condition of employment.
Because investigators are required to testify in court and may be asked about their criminal convictions by the prosecutor, candidates will be asked at the interview to discuss any criminal convictions.
A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hire.

Considerable knowledge of criminal investigation and interviewing methods and techniques; computer skills; effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; time management, organizational, problem solving and analytical skills; the ability to work effectively with people from varying backgrounds and cultures; and the availability to occasionally work non-traditional hours.

Salary: This classification is in pay schedule/range 7-04 with starting pay between $17.243 and $28.451 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. The State of Wisconsin offers a significant benefit program. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Qualifications: This position involves extensive travel, which requires possession or eligibility to possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license upon appointment, and must be maintained while serving in the position.
