This position serves as a uniformed Police Officer assigned to the Milwaukee VA Medical Center, Milwaukee WI, appointed as a law enforcement official under Title 38 of the United States Code. Section 1.218, authorized to carry firearms and make arrests. DUTIES INCLUDE:
-Performs preliminary investigations of crimes perpetrated to include felonies, misdemeanors, petty offenses and violations of regulations. -Responds to reports of crimes in progress and protects/secures crime scenes and preserves evidence found. -Conducts legal investigations and performs legal interrogations of alleged offenders. -Physically subdues and restrains combative, violet, mentally ill or suicidal patients, employees and/or visitors. -Prepares comprehensive reports based on statements from victims, witnesses and/or complainants necessary to place valid charges and to assist in prosecution. -Performs vehicular and foot patrols I order to regulate and control vehicular traffic during adverse weather or emergency conditions. -Responds to medical emergencies, fire intrusion, panic and disaster alarms. -Manages information security within areas of responsibility to assure that computer system security and confidentiality of sensitive information is maintained. -Enforces full range of Federal, state, county, and municipal rules and regulations. Experience:
Applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level Federal service that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Police Officer position at the GS-6 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE OFFICER POSITION:
New VA Police Officers are required to successfully complete the in-residence (320 hour) 8 week Basic Police Officer Course in Little Rock, Arkansas. Satisfactory completion of this course is a condition of continued employment. Officers are required to carry agency-approved firearms while on duty on VA property. Officers must achieve and maintain qualification with the agency-approved firearm as condition of gaining and continuing employment as a Police Officer. Officers must also successfully complete physical and psychological examinations prior to entering on duty and annually thereafter as a condition of continued employment. Applicants must possess a valid State license, have a safe driving record and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. Applicants selected for this position must be proficient in the English language in accordance with Public Law 94-102 dated November 23, 1977. An individual who is convicted of a domestic violence charge cannot be authorized to own, be issued, purchase, or otherwise have possession of a handgun under the Lautenberg Amendment (PL 104-208) to the Gun Control Act of 1968 (18 USC 922). A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination. This is a testing designated position. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with the VA. At the GS-06 grade level, applicants MUST have arresting authority - presently or in the past. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, long hours of standing, walking driving and similar actives. The incumbent must respond to alarms, purse suspects, participate in training actives, climb stairs and walk during assigned foot patrols I and around large building, campus, and other physical settings. Agility, dexterity and strength are needed to pursue, apprehend and detain uncooperative suspects. On a regular recurring basis the work requires strenuous exertion physically restraining disorderly individual to prevent harm to other or the individual. Strenuous physical exertion is also required during many required and recurring training activities such as those related to weapons training, Active threat Response training and Ground Defense and Recovery training. The incumbent works in an environment identified as potential soft targets for Active Threat and other terrorist-like events. The work environment regularly involves high risk with exposure to potentially dangerous situation or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions. This level includes work in areas such as hospital, cemeteries and other VA centers where the public has easy access and officer must patrol in location where persons may be armed while attempting auto theft, vandalism, narcotics, transactions, and other offenses which can lead to assault with or without a weapon in order to avoid arrest.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
